The Best Sunday Carvery & Roast in Ayrshire

You can’t go wrong with a proper Sunday carvery.

We are talking golden beef dripping roasties, tender aged Sirloin beef, and rich red wine gravy, ladled all over the top. But to truly be the best Sunday Roast, you’ve got to have something beyond the ordinary. Think truffle mac & cheese, honey & maple-glazed bacon loin, hash browns and creamy green peppercorn sauce. Mouth watering? It should be. It’s what it takes to have the best Sunday carvery that Ayrshire has to offer.

Put simply, Sunday lunch should be worth leaving the house for. Not a lukewarm plate from a heated counter. Not reheated vegetables swimming in water. Not a token slice of meat carved from something that has been sitting under a lamp since opening.

At The Kirkmichael Arms in South Ayrshire, Sunday is done properly. Seven roasts, each prepared with the same care and attention that earned us a place in the Michelin Guide. Sides that go well beyond the standard. And sauces that are made to finish the plate, not fill it. If you are searching for a Sunday carvery in Ayrshire that treats the roast with the respect it deserves, you are in the right place. This is what we have to offer.

What to Expect on a Sunday at The Kirkmichael Arms

A Sunday roast is a special occasion, and we treat it as one at The Kirkmichael Arms. Our Sunday carvery runs from 1:00 pm on the second Sunday of every month - one day, done properly.

The roast menu runs throughout the afternoon, and the pub is open for drinks alongside. The full kitchen is dedicated to the carvery, so every plate gets the attention it deserves. No specials, no other menu. Just the carvery - how it should be on a Sunday.

The Kirkmichael Arms is a proper country pub, tucked away in the rolling hills of South Ayrshire. On our carvery Sundays, expect a relaxed atmosphere. Families, couples, walkers, and locals all sharing the same space. Dogs are welcome in the pub area, and there is no dress code. Come as you are.

The menu is built around seven individual roasts, a mixed carvery plate, and a generous selection of sides and sauces that come with every dish. It is not a help-yourself buffet - each plate is prepared and served to order.

What's on the Sunday Menu

The roast menu at The Kirkmichael Arms is split into three parts - the roasts themselves, the sides that come with every dish, and the sauces. Let’s break it down.

The Roasts

Our Sunday carvery features seven roasts for you to enjoy. Can’t decide? We don’t blame you. That’s why we also offer a mixed carvery plate for those who want a bit of variety.

  • - Aged Sirloin of Scotch Beef - £26.95
  • - Lemon & Thyme Corn Fed Chicken - £24.95
  • - Honey & Maple Glazed Bacon Loin - £24.95
  • - Charred Rosemary & Garlic Lamb Neck Fillet - £27.95
  • - Tranche of Turbot on the Bone - £36.00
  • - Lochryan Venison Haunch - £24.95
  • - Mixed Carvery Plate (Beef, Bacon & Chicken) - £31.95

Our roasts include aged Scotch beef, turbot on the bone and venison haunch - the kind of choices you would expect from a Michelin-listed kitchen, served in a relaxed Sunday setting.

The Trimmings

Who says trimmings can’t be the star of the show? You won’t find roast sides like ours anywhere else. Seriously. Every roast is served with the following sides:

  • - Beef dripping roast potatoes
  • - Roasted carrot
  • - Spring cabbage
  • - Cauliflower puree
  • - Truffle cheddar mac & cheese
  • - Creamed cavolo nero with bacon bits
  • - Hash brown with chive sour cream
  • - Watercress
  • - Yorkshire pudding
  • - Mustard
  • - Horseradish

Truffle cheddar mac & cheese, hash brown with chive sour cream, creamed cavolo nero - need we say any more?

Over The Top

You can have the best roasts, the best sides, but if you don’t have the right sauces to bring it all together, what’s the point? Each roast comes with a choice of one sauce:

  • - Creamy Green Peppercorn
  • - Red Wine Gravy
  • - Bearnaise
  • - Pernod & Chive Velouté

Additional sauces are available for £3.00. Four sauces, all made in-house. Each sauce has its natural partner, but there are no rules. Pick whichever takes your fancy. The red wine gravy sits well with just about everything. And after all, you can’t go wrong with gravy on a Sunday roast.

Our Approach to Local Sourcing

At The Kirkmichael Arms, we smoke our own salmon, churn butter, cure bacon, and bake bread. This same approach carries through to our Sunday menu. We work with local suppliers and source produce from across Ayrshire and the surrounding areas. You won’t find a restaurant in Ayrshire with more local Scottish produce than ours. And that is something we are proud of. Nothing arrives pre-made, pre-portioned, or pre-packaged. It is a painstaking, old-style way of doing things - but we believe you can taste that on the plate.

Getting Here From Ayr, Prestwick & Troon

The Kirkmichael Arms is located at 3-5 Straiton Road, Kirkmichael, South Ayrshire, KA19 7PH. We are tucked away in the Ayrshire countryside, just inland from the coast - but we are closer than you might think.

  • - From Ayr - approximately 20 minutes
  • - From Prestwick - approximately 25 minutes
  • - From Troon - approximately 30 minutes
  • - From Glasgow - approximately 55 minutes

Sunday carvery searches tend to happen on the day itself - people looking for somewhere worth going, often already in the area. If that is you, and you are anywhere along the Ayrshire coast or heading south from Glasgow, we are well within reach. There is plenty of parking in the village and the surrounding countryside is worth the drive alone.
